Theatre Apiary
02.07.2018The Juliusz Słowacki Theatre boasts its own apiary. The bees that found their home on the roof of the Theatre come from Alwernia, where the Theatre’s music director – Halina Jarczyk – is active in the bee-keeping club ‘Nektar’. The club memberstend to the hives and check how the insectsmanage on a daily basis.
‘Bees in cities are nothing new – whether it’s Paris, New York, or other metropolises, the roofs often house hives. Bees can cope very well inan urban environment. The cities are full of vegetation –unlike large farming fields, their melliferous flowers and plants are not sprayed with pesticides, which is very beneficial for bees. We still do not know how exactly the honey will be used, but it will surely find its bestpurpose as a donation for charity, or as a gift for our guests. The campaign to place hives on the roof of the Słowacki Theatre was supported by Greenpeace Polska and Tygodnik Powszechny weekly. Beehives on the roof of the theatre will be invisible, and will not in any way affect the outline of this historical building. The project is of a permanent nature, and serves the purpose of saving this extraordinary species of insects,’ said Krzysztof Głuchowski, the Director of the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre.
The opening of the theatre apiary at noon of 28 May 2017 in the square in front of the Theatre was accompanied by a special outdoor eventhosted by the Poetry Salon, and an educational programme offered by Greenpeace.
