The Curtain of Women
130 years of the Słowacki Theatre. 130 famous women of Krakow. One new curtain. But what a curtain - the Curtain of Women!
The idea for a hand-woven curtain dedicated to Krakow's women originated in a meeting of Krzysztof Głuchowski and Małgorzata Markiewicz. Markiewicz is an artist who in her work explores the theme of women in very different contexts, and uses as her artistic medium weaving and embroidery techniques, commonly associated with activities dismissively described as ‘feminine’.
The Curtain of Women has been jointly created by women: the author of the project Małgorzata Markiewicz, weavers Bernarda Rość and Lucyna Kędzierska from Podlasie, local embroiderers from the LUD-Art Association at the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków and theatre seamstresses.
‘The Curtain of Women’ constitutes an uncommon way of celebrating the 130th anniversary of the Theatre. Its design features the names of 130 women of Krakow who, due to their activities in various spheres of social, patriotic and artistic life, deserve to remain in our memory. 'The Curtain of Women' will not serve as a mere functional object, but a work that carries an important message: visitors will be able to admire this enormous textile image, a truly unique piece of contemporary art, a story about women created from warp and weft, millions of interwoven threads.
