‘The Red and the Black’ is a classic masterpiece of the Romanticism period in world literature. The novel carries a powerful sentimental charge, and plenty of kitsch and irony. But more than anything, it constitutes perfect material for a play about a world in which great ideas have died and were replaced by comfort and stability. The story takes place in the 19th century, during the Restoration period.

The Bourbons' resumption of power entails erasing the memory of the times of the Great Revolution, and persecutions of the heroes of the Napoleonic wars. They reward the faithful and the mediocre, the careerists who are willing to do anything for the sake of their own interests. How does the youngest generation see itself in this declining society? What role models do they follow, what do they bring into the world, what kind of future will they build? I have an overwhelming impression that many people in today’s Poland are asking themselves similar questions.
